Is it safe to inhale hydrogen?
Absolutely. Hydrogen is created within our bodies when we digest our food, and it is an entirely natural part of our cellular make-up. Inhaling hydrogen will not cause harmful side-effects. We limit the length of sessions for new customers, just so they can assess how their body will respond to the treatment.
What is oxidative stress and what causes it?
Oxygen molecules exist in different forms, which each contain different properties. The commonest and most stable form of oxygen is made up of two oxygen atoms (O2); this is the oxygen that gives us life and energy when we breathe. Molecular oxygen in the body can occur in other forms, such as hydroxyl (OH) - the most reactive free radical, which has been found to be responsible for oxidative stress. The impact of oxidative stress takes many forms. It causes cell damage leading to wrinkles, skin blemishes, cataracts and ulcers. It also causes liver disease, blood vessel damage and impairs the immune system, which can lead to cancer, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), dementia, asthma, bad breath and retinopathy, as well as ageing.
How does hydrogen inhalation help to combat oxidative stress within the body?
Research studies carried out in Japan and other parts of the world suggest that hydrogen therapy (inhaling a safe and inert hydrogen gas mixed with oxygen) helps to counteract the effects of oxidative stress. Hydrogen commonly occurs as molecules consisting of a pair of atoms (H2). When two atoms of hydrogen react with the oxygen free radical they combine to form water (H2O), which is passed out of the body as water, in our urine and sweat.
This is similar to the natural process that occurs when we eat a good and healthy diet - the effect of which is to increase the hydrogen naturally produced within the body. This hydrogen then combines with the free radicals to neutralise them, creating water. We are all increasingly aware of the importance of a good diet and good gut health, but perhaps not so aware of how the science behind it works.
Is it true that hydrogen can rejuvenate us?
Wrinkles, grey hair and dark spots are the outward signs of ageing, but within our bodies the same ageing process causes many more debilitating problems. If free radicals can be effectively removed from our bodies through the use of hydrogen, this will combat all the outward as well as inward signs of ageing, and thus help to rejuvenate the body.
One study noted that after using hydrogen as an anti-ageing tool, within two to five days, type 1 collagen synthesis was doubled with an increased fibroblast activity. Neck wrinkles were also significantly reduced. (*1,Kato et al., 2012)
In Japan there are beauty spas with a whole range of treatments dedicated to restoring our “inner glow”. Nobody is claiming that the ageing process can be reversed, but there does seem to be a consensus that it can be slowed down.
How much hydrogen should we inhale to improve our health?
There is no maximum amount of hydrogen that is safe to inhale, since it will be excreted in your urine and sweat when it combines with oxygen. However, it is not advisable to start with more than one hour’s hydrogen inhalation (at the maximum level of 660 ml per minute supplied by the generators at Suhaku Space) until you have become familiar with your body’s reaction to this therapy.
The frequency we will advise for your hydrogen therapy treatments will depend on each individual and their particular health concerns. Some people experience relief of acute symptoms after only ten or twenty minutes, while others with chronic conditions may need to undergo the therapy for much longer before becoming aware of the benefits and improvements to their health.
How many times a week is hydrogen inhalation recommended?
Hydrogen selectively scavenges harmful reactive oxygen species. It reaches every part of the body, including the brain. A session once or twice a week at Suhaku Space usually produces changes in your physical condition of which you are aware. However, there are many other changes occurring within your body, of which you may not be conscious. There is no upper limit for the length of time or frequency of hydrogen intake, so you can choose when and for how long to inhale hydrogen, according to your physical condition and to fit in with your diary and lifestyle.
Are there any activities which should be avoided before, during or after hydrogen inhalation therapy?
We recommend leaving an hour after intensive exercise or a heavy meal before coming for treatment, for your own comfort.
It is possible for you to read, eat or drink whilst you are having the therapy (especially if you are using a Suhaku Home Generator in the privacy of your own home).
Hydrogen inhalation will not interfere with any of your normal activities after the session.
Will hydrogen inhalation help me to sleep better?
Many people have reported dramatically improved quality of sleep after hydrogen inhalation.
Why does hydrogen inhalation help us to sleep better?
Hydrogen helps to regulate autonomic nervous system disorders, caused by stress and insomnia. When you inhale hydrogen, the parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant and switches to relaxation mode. This lowers the temperature in the brain and allows you to fall easily into a deep sleep and wake up refreshed in the morning.
Will hydrogen therapy give me more energy?
As your general health improves, your energy levels should increase, especially if you are sleeping better. Some of our younger and healthier clients have reported that their increased energy levels have led to much quicker recovery from strenuous exercise and much better performances.
In addition, since hydrogen has an antioxidant effect and activates the mitochondria in cells, so your metabolic rate is increased and this gives you more energy.
Why do athletes use hydrogen inhalation?
In recent years, the effects of hydrogen gas inhalation have been attracting attention in the sports world, and many athletes are starting to use it as part of their training programme. It not only relieves fatigue, but also makes the body less prone to fatigue. It is also thought to be effective in improving concentration and judgment.
Can hydrogen inhalation help with depression?
Hydrogen has been shown to relieve fatigue and improve blood flow to the brain, and there is hope that it may prove effective in preventing and treating both depression and dementia. Specifically, it has been shown to increase blood flow in the frontal lobe area, which is responsible for motivation, emotion, reason, and thought.
What effect does hydrogen inhalation have on blood pressure?
Several studies have shown that hydrogen inhalation therapy can help to normalise blood pressure. Many people with hypertension who have tried hydrogen inhalation therapy have reported a reduction in blood pressure. Some studies have also shown that hydrogen inhalation therapy can improve vascular health and blood flow.
Can hydrogen inhalation help with weight loss?
Hydrogen inhalation removes active oxygen from the body, thereby improving blood flow and increasing your basic metabolic rate. This helps to eliminate waste products from the body and promote fat burning, leading to weight loss.
Can hydrogen inhalation help to ease the symptoms of Long Covid?
Published medical research studies have shown that hydrogen can alleviate symptoms of Long Covid, including shortness of breath, fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, loss of smell, loss of taste, insomnia and muscle ache.
What do I need to wear for a hands-on treatment?
You should wear soft, comfortable, clothes in which you can fully relax while the therapist is treating your feet, legs, hands, arms, shoulders and head. You may be asked to remove jewellery, glasses and other headwear.
I wear contact lenses. Should I remove them before having hydrogen therapy through goggles?
No. This is not necessary, since hydrogen is the smallest known molecule and can easily pass through the skin, the eyeball, contact lenses - even the blood/brain barrier.
What is the Suhaku Home Hydrogen Generator?
This is a portable machine, available to purchase from us at Suhaku Space, which will enable you to use hydrogen therapy in your own home and at your own convenience. The machine delivers hydrogen at a lower concentration than the large generators used at Suhaku Space - offering 100ml of hydrogen per minute as opposed to 660 ml per minute. However you can use it much more often to get the benefits you are looking for. It also has a Sleep Setting which allows you to leave it running for 6 hours at night, delivering 30 ml of hydrogen per minute.
The home machine has a nozzle, meaning you do not need to wear goggles or a cannula (unless you prefer this), but can breathe in the hydrogen just by being close to it - and you can even give your pets the benefit of the therapy by bringing them close to the nozzle.
